Our educational history began long before we entered the doors of Washington Irving High School in 1947. We each had our individual pasts and formative years at elementary schools throughout Clarksburg and other towns and states. The city grade schools were: Alta Vista, located on Haymond Highway and serving the section of town called Broad Oaks;Morgan, Carlyle, Towers, etc. (We are trying to access as many photos of these earlier years as possible; however, nothing was saved by the respective schools when they consolidated. We are dependent upon whatever you graduates have saved. By accessing the names of the schools you can view some of the photos that have been submitted so far.) We spent six years in elementary school and went on to junior high school for a two-year stint before entering high school. Some of us attended Central Junior High School. When we entered Washington Irving, Kenneth Cubbon was principal. The first principal to serve at the site opening in 1914 on Lee Avenue was Orie McConkey. If You’re interested in the history of WI previous to our class, Hail Washington Irving, by Carolyn Burnside, gives an account of that era. |
