High on Haymond Highway hill, with what seemed like hundreds of steps to the white front doors, stood the red brick Alta Vista Grade School building.  Affable G.W. Lawson was the principal.  The three R’s were taught by: Pauline Coffindaffer Iams, Lucy  Stull, Pauline Findley Hutchinson,  Julia Swiger James, Elizabeth Morrow,  Mary Harper Brown, Miss Springer, Mrs. Lynch and others.  In addition, penmanship was taught by Alma Shackleford, music by Regina Caulfield, and tap dance by Louis Buttafusco. Occasionally, Miss Duncan, the health nurse, came to visit.  Mr. Bane was the custodian.  We performed in a harmonica band and  operettas in the spring.  During World War II we saved newspapers and aluminum and bought  U. S. Savings Stamps.  Among the students were: Donald Hinkle, Donald Childers, Mary Ann Sutter, Patty Rogers, Leah Hardy, Nancy Jackson, Donna Hall, Elaine Colloras, Alice Farris,  Constance Wilkinson, Barbara Christie, Kathleen Rollins, Sylvia Wolfe, Mildred Honaker, Eddie Wilson,  Lee Hefner, Betty Joyce,  Shirley Lyons, Scott Riley,  Marjorie Russell, and Andy Rogers.

Below is a picture taken at one of the spring operettas. Since the picture included the entire stage, the right half of the picture is on the next page.
